What is one referral source worth to you?

Set it to one of your real assisted living partners. Then picture losing it for six months because a new administrator brought in their own hospice.

Utah's Medicare hospice payments averaged $174.45 per day of care in fiscal year 2024 ($245.7 million over 1.41 million days, all levels of care). The 55-day default is the 2022 median hospice stay for assisted living residents, per MedPAC; the average was 165 days. Using the median and 2024 payment levels keeps these figures conservative. Studies like this count assisted living as "home," so assisted living referrals disappear into the community share. Yet assisted living accounts for 24% of Medicare hospice claims, and its residents stay on hospice longest. Census Watch exists to make that channel visible.

Facility residents tend to stay longer, so a high figure can point to a facility-heavy hospice. VerifiedCMS Medicare Post-Acute Care Utilization, Hospice by Provider; all 84 Utah rows pulled raw.

  4. D Data gap

22 of 63 county records show an expired license date

Eight expired before the file's March 7 update and fourteen since. Update, October 26: Utah's live licensing records show 21 of the 22 were renewed and are valid into 2026 to 2028. The 22nd, Best Assisted Living, LLC (4 beds), no longer has a public record. The March file was simply out of date.

Corrections: Oct 26, 2026: signal D now reflects Utah's live licensing records. 21 of the 22 licenses shown as expired in the March state file had been renewed. Oct 24, 2026: the Utah hospice market figures were labeled "traditional Medicare." They also include Medicare Advantage members, whose hospice care Medicare pays directly. Label corrected; no numbers changed.
